What really happens when you relocate to another country?

The cost of immigration

Immigration can provide you with opportunities to study and work overseas, and in some cases find asylum and perhaps find the love of your life, abroad.

Yet when you find yourself in a different nation, your sense of belonging will be challenged and bruised. Here is how.

First, there will be a culture shock.

When you migrate to a different space or nation you migrate with culture. The values, traditions, attitudes, norms that shape you. The only problem with this is that the host nation has its culture and value system too. Whether we agree with these values or not they are there. Unavoidable these two will collide. When these two cultural value systems collide there is thunder.

Then you become invisible.

In the conflict, one will have to give in and it’s usually the migrant. Gradually you realize that your culture is no longer the norm. That your values are no longer a reference point anymore in the society. Even that your knowledge, perhaps qualifications and skills will not be appreciated, needed, or seen. Silently you withdraw and becomes invisible to the community in which you live

Finally, you lose your sense of belonging.

For many cultural identities provides a sense of belonging. Whenever their culture shock there will also be a loss of sense of belonging.

Belonging is a human need. When people lose identity and sense of belonging, they grieve and they are less likely to be open to integration. They are bleeding and aching. It does not matter whether you are a migrant, black or white, we all have the need to belong. Fulfillment of belonging is essential for any human optimal health and development

While there is a cost to immigration, the good news is that you can redefine your cultural identity and sense of belonging.
